We have a very special ASHL player of the Week. We're recognizing long time Adult Safe Hockey League member and hockey enthusiast Gerry Leiper! Congratulations on 1000 games with us Gerry, and here is to the next 1000!
Here is what Gerry had to say:
"You know, I never played hockey as a kid and only started when my son Parker started. I always wanted to play the game, but my parents didn't want to do the 6am practice thing etc. so I played soccer with Dennis Rodland. LOL.
I got started when my friend John Craighead (Canucks 2002), did a Christmas skate that year and I didn't look like a total idiot. I was in my early 30's...I took 6 months off that following summer and practiced or played hockey 9 times a week. Yes, some days twice a day. I trained like a pro that summer in John's survivor camp with Brent Seabrook of the Chicago Blackhawks....we connected because we were both older than the kids there. Anyhow, that's how it began at Twin Rinks ASHL.
I've rebuilt my life around hockey now. All my friends are hockey players, my boss and old boss play on my teams. Heck, I've even turned hockey into a part time job. I am the assistant GM for the Surrey Knights and am the Head Coach of the Cloverdale Midget A2 team, with my son Parker as my assistant coach. I have 4 ASHL teams that play out of Twin Rinks..I think I am obsessive compulsive about hockey!"
